Swindon School Nursing Service

The school nursing service includes specialist nurses, registered nurses and school health screeners, all of whom have a wealth of experience and undertake regular training to work with children, young people and their families.

School nurses support children’s health needs within their educational environment. This support includes:

  • Help with developing and agreeing health care plans for children with complex needs and training staff when children need special medical help or medication in school
  • Offering immunisations as part of the National Immunisation Programme
  • Meeting with children and their families to support health issues
  • Vision, hearing, height and weight screening
  • Mental and emotional health and wellbeing

Every school and alternative setting has an allocated named school nurse who works during term time. There is also a nurse working within the Youth Offending Team.

School Nurses’ Main Roles Include

  • Supporting children and young people with their physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing and equipping them with the resources to enable them to make healthy lifestyle choices throughout life
  • Offering confidential advice and support to children, young people, parents and carers
  • Working in partnership with children, families and professionals to identify and protect children who are suffering, or are at risk of harm
  • Referring children and young people with specific health needs to appropriate specialist support where necessary

Eligibility

All children attending mainstream and alternative education settings (aged 4-18 years) are eligible for school nursing support.

How to Arrange a Referral for Your Child

  • Referrals are accepted from parents, children, young people, school staff or professionals
  • Referrals can be made by parents and young people via phone, text, email or in writing to the named school nurse for the setting

Each school/alternative setting will be able to provide you with the details of the school nurse.

What Happens Next?

Once a referral has been received, the school nurse will contact you to arrange an appointment or discuss your concerns. This will generally be within three working weeks.
